Presentation

Despite the fact that the methodology of Simulated/Structed Patients was born with HB Barrows (Simulated Patients in Medical Teaching, Canad. Med. Ass. J. April 6, 1968, vol. 98 ) and its development with the use of ordinary citizens: there is an important difference between role play and simulation. In the last decades the use in teaching is being carried out primarily with technological devices in Hospitals and the technique has been developed in a highly specialized environment. This is useful both for the health of citizens and for the need for private funding. However, for teaching in General Practice the presence of ordinary people (citizens, actors) remains necessary. In each session we propose two clinical stories, using our simulators: Raffaele and Veronica, common citizens who have been working with us for 15 years. Considering that the workshop took place in an international context, we also proposed to investigate the transcultural problem about barrier language and about feeling of illness.

Conclusion.

The participation: 48 colleagues, 28 from Italy, 20 from other countries (Poland, The Netherlands, France, Spain, Slovenia, Austria, Israel, Malta, Portugal, Germany, Montenegro) The most important difference when using this approach, which generated many discussions, was on the issues related to the risk of suicide and how to deal with it. The difficulty posed by language (the simulations were in English; in one simulation there was one patient who spoke bad English, in the other visits the patients were accompanied by Italians who spoke some English) was brilliantly solved by the colleagues, using a non-verbal approach and using more time (less where the problem was very clinical).
